Music licensing talks are heating up between TikTok and Universal Music Group as negotiations have left the conference room and entered the public sphere. "Their core mission is to generate as much money as they can from their recordings for their shareholders," David Herlihy, a copyright lawyer and music industry professor at Northeastern University, told BI. The company is in the process of launching a dedicated streaming app, TikTok Music, and has worked closely with artists on influencer listening parties, livestreams, and in-person events. But TikTok, as a global social giant, is an important product for music artists and labels. This is why the music industry is seeking to capture more value."

SAO PAULO, July 6 (Reuters) - Chinese company ByteDance, which owns short-video company TikTok, on Thursday said it will launch a new music streaming service in Brazil and Indonesia, as it tries to become a player in that market. The initiative is a new attempt by ByteDance, as the company in a statement said it will stop its existing music streaming service Resso as of Sept. 5 in both countries. Media reports late last year said ByteDance was planning an expansion into more countries of its music streaming service, a market currently led by companies like Spotify (SPOT.N). TikTok Music will have three monthly plans in Brazil that will cost between 8.5 reais ($1.73) and 26.9 reais, data on its website showed, slightly below the service price Spotify offers. Its music ambitions could ruffle feathers at record labels and publishers — unless it pays out. TikTok's app regularly sparks trends that help songs go viral, making it a favorite of marketers at major labels and independents. TikTok works closely with record labels and artists on promotional efforts like livestreamed concerts, in-person performances, and private listening parties with TikTok stars. Spotify has maintained a tenuous relationship with the labels over the years as it's sought to balance profit margins while splitting revenue with artists, labels, and publishers. Still, even as record labels and publishers push TikTok to pay more to music rights holders, they're investing more in the app.
TikTok has shifted staff on its music team in North America. An exec from its song-distribution tool is now leading TikTok's artist services for the region. TikTok has shuffled staff on its music team in North America over the past few months, naming a new artist-services lead and moving a key exec into a role at its parent company. TikTok has invested heavily in its music staff over the last few years after becoming an essential platform for song discovery and artist marketing. The company may even roll out its own TikTok Music streaming service one day, a trademark filing suggests.

The company is using its editorial influence on TikTok, Resso, and CapCut to promote SoundOn songs. Would it eventually roll out a standalone music streaming service, as a May 2022 trademark filing from its parent company ByteDance suggested? The company is now offering editorial placements to some SoundOn artists across TikTok, ByteDance's music streaming app Resso, and its video-editing app CapCut. These placements, which include being featured in high-traffic playlists, offer SoundOn users a unique path to being discovered. TikTok's parent ByteDance previously sought to hire for a similar A&R role in Jakarta, Music Business Worldwide reported in May.
The update comes as the company removed last week the song catalogs of major labels from its video app. In 2020, Triller partnered with Billboard to publish weekly "Top Triller US" and "Top Triller Global" charts. In its statement to Insider, Triller suggested that removing music from major labels could help save the company money. The Triller app remains just one piece of the company's overall business. Triller even invoked TikTok in its statement about its decision to remove the catalogs of major music labels, writing that, "TikTok and the labels have aligned so closely."
